I’ve got a printrbot play and with all the shrouds around the print head I can’t get a good view of the print with a webcam to make sure the print is progressing properly. It seems to me that perhaps a live audio will tell me more about what bad things are going on (filament stuck on spool, etc.) Loud sounds are probably bad and I should pause the print and go check on it.
Anyone us think this is interesting?
Steve – you are the first person that has requested this feature. I have never heard of people using audio to diagnose print problems.
With that said, at the moment, we have no plans on implementing this specifically – Although, live video streaming is coming to AstroPrint in the future, which can theoretically contain an audio stream.

I also have a PB play, and I recommend downloading some of the replacement fan shrouds. They work great and allow you to see the print as it goes.
I still want live streaming or at the very least a resolution option (I have a 1080p camera, I REAAAALLLLLY don’t want a 640x480 timelapse…?) but audio streaming is a cool idea. Until then, though, I would try a replacement shroud and see if that works for you

I use audio from my web cam too…never thought to ask about it with astroprint but I can see it’s use…
If I am at work I can’t watch my print job but I listen to a low audio feed, I can hear the extruder start clicking
or the loud thrash of a part that has come loose, then bring up the video and decide if I need to cancel…
I guess if it was a simple thing that comes free with the video having audio in Astroprint natively would get me closer to leaving the stand-alone webcam…

This would be another great feature to have. My current set up is AstroPrint + wifi CCTV camera which transmits both live video and audio streaming. I can just listen to the audio and realize that there’s a filament grinding.
